Privacy policy
We collect nothing about you directly. Google Analytics counts how many people read each case; in Europe it runs only if you allow it. This page sets out exactly what it collects, how to turn it off, and how advertising will work once it goes live.
What we collect directly
Nothing on our own server. There is no account on this site. We do not ask for or store names, addresses or phone numbers.
The only form is the newsletter sign-up. If you subscribe, your email address goes to Kit, the service that sends the newsletter, and is used only for that. You can unsubscribe from any email in one click.
If you email us, we keep what you send for as long as it takes to deal with it. If you ask us to remove a page, we keep a short record that the request was made and acted on, because we need to be able to show we honoured it.
What third parties collect
One analytics service runs on this site.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to see how many people read each case and where they arrive from. It sets cookies and records a shortened version of your IP address. This tells us that a page was read. It does not tell us who read it.
If you are in Europe, including the EU, the UK, Switzerland and Kosovo, it does not load at all unless you choose Allow on the notice that appears when you first visit. Choose Decline and no analytics cookies are set, and the site behaves identically. We tell whether you are in Europe from the time zone your device reports, which is read in your browser and never sent to us; if it is a European time zone, or it cannot be read, you are asked first.
Everywhere else, Google Analytics loads when you visit. You can turn it off at any time with the button below, and it will not load again in that browser.
Advertising: Google AdSense
We have applied to show advertising through Google AdSense. Until ads go live on this site, no advertising code runs here and no advertising cookies are set. When they do, the rest of this section applies.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, and opt out of some other vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info. Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you are in the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, ads will only be shown after you have made a choice on a consent notice, and you will be able to choose ads that are not personalised.
Affiliate links
Most cases end with a short list of books, and a few articles mention products; these use Amazon affiliate links, marked as such on the page where they appear. If you follow one, Amazon knows you arrived from here and we may earn a commission on a purchase. We do not receive your name, your order, or anything else about you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Payments
If you buy from the shop, support the site on Patreon or buy a coffee on Ko-fi, you do it on their sites: Payhip handles shop orders, PayPal processes the payment, and Patreon and Ko-fi handle memberships and one-off support. They collect what they need to process the payment and deliver your files, under their own privacy policies. We receive your name, email address and what you bought, so we can help if something goes wrong. We never see your card details.
Your choice, and changing it
Your choice is stored in your browser, not on our server. Nothing else about you is stored alongside it.
To change your mind, use the buttons below, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. Turning analytics off restricts nothing: every page remains fully readable.
What we do not do
We do not sell data. We do not build profiles of individual readers. We do not use anything you read here to infer health conditions about you, and we do not pass anything to health insurers, employers or data brokers.
This matters more here than on most sites. People arrive at these pages worried about a symptom, a medicine, or a child. What you read is not treated as information about you.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask what data is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to processing, and withdraw consent. For data held by Google Analytics, the fastest routes are the browser opt-out add-on Google publishes, and declining on the notice here, or turning analytics off above, so that it never loads.
For anything we hold directly, write to us and we will answer.
Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. Some cases describe children as patients; that is a matter of what is written about, not who the site is for.
Log data
Our host, Vercel, keeps standard server logs including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running. These are not used for advertising.
